How much do professors get paid?
[222002420020] |The American Association of University Professors recently released a report on the financial situation of professors.
[222002420030] |One interesting datum apparently gleaned from the report is a ranking of universities by full professor salaries.
[222002420040] |I have heard it said that Harvard pays below market because it pays in prestige, but that doesn't jive with its industry-leading $192,600/year (keep in mind this is average for full professor, which is rarely achieved before one's 40s at best).
[222002420050] |One interesting fact noted shown in figure 2 of the report itself is that while, yes, PhDs do earn less than professional degrees (law, business, medicine, etc.), the difference is, on average, not nearly so large as one might expect.
[222002420060] |In 2007, the average PhD made around $95,000, while the average professional school graduate earned about $115,000 (both numbers are down, incidentally, from 1997).
[222002420070] |That said, the ceilings are probably different.
[222002420080] |The average full professor at Harvard -- arguably the pinnacle of the profession for someone with a PhD -- as already said makes just under $200,000/year...or about the same as the typical big-firm lawyer a couple years out of law school (though perhaps not this year).

[222002430050] |What are we to make of the fact that Neanderthals may have had the ability to produce sounds similar to those of modern humans?
[222002430060] |In a stunning announcement this morning, freelance writer Joshuah Bearman announced that he had pinpointed the exact location, if not the date, of the origin of modern language: Lake Turkana in Kenya.

[222002430130] |Since this is in an article about a wedding, I suspect tha Bearman was not actually intending to floor the scientific establishment with an announcement; he assumed this was common knowledge.

[222002430150] |I wondered if perhaps this was some sort of urban legend (like all the Eskimo words for snow), but Googling has turned up nothing, though of course some important archaeological finds come from that region.

[222002440060] |But the purpose of writing a paper is not for it to appear in print, the purpose is for people to read it.
[222002440070] |The more papers are published, it stands to reason, the fewer people read each one.
[222002440080] |Thus, there is some argument for publishing fewer, higher quality papers.
[222002440090] |I have heard that the average publication gets fewer than 1 citation, meaning many papers are never cited and thus presumably were not found to be relevant to anybody's research program.
[222002440100] |It is in this context that I read the following excited announcement from PLoS ONE, a relatively new open-access journal:

[222002450020] |Raymond Kurzweil, inventor and futurist, predicts that by the 2030s, it will be possible to upload your mind, experience virtual reality through brain implants, have experiences beamed into your mind, and communicate telepathically.
[222002450030] |Just to name a few predictions.
[222002450040] |Kurzweil, as he himself recently noted on On The Media, has a track record of successful predictions over the past three decades.
[222002450050] |Past performance being the best predictor of future performance, this leads people to at least pay attention to his arguments.
[222002450060] |Nonetheless, as the mutual funds folk say, past performance is a predictor, not a guarantee.
[222002450070] |Exponential Progress
[222002450080] |I suspect that Kurzweil is right about many things, but I'm not sure about the telepathy.
[222002450090] |When I have heard him speak, his primary argument for his predictions is telepathy only seems like a distant achievement because we think technology moves at a linear rate, but in fact knowledge and capability increases exponentially.
[222002450100] |This has clearly been the case in terms of computing speed.
[222002450110] |Fair enough.
[222002450120] |The problem is that we aren't sure exactly how hard the problems we are facing are.
[222002450130] |There is a famous anecdote about an early pioneer in Artificial Intelligence assigning "vision" as a summer project.
[222002450140] |This was many decades ago, and as anyone in the field knows, machine vision is improving rapidly but still not that great.
[222002450150] |A more contemporary example: A colleague I work with closely built a computation model of a relatively simple process in human language and tried to simulate some data.
[222002450160] |However, it took too long to run.
[222002450170] |When he looked at it more carefully, he realize that his program required more cycles to complete than there are atoms in the known universe.
[222002450180] |That is, merely waiting for faster computers was not going to help; he needed to re-think his program.

[222002450200] |In short, even if we grant Kurzweil that computers improve exponentially, somebody still needs to program them.
[222002450210] |Our ability to program may also be improving exponentially, but I'm unconvinced that we know how far we have to go.
[222002450220] |Suppose I wanted to walk to some destination 1,000 miles away.
[222002450230] |I walk 1 mile the first year.
[222002450240] |If I keep going at the same rate, it'll take 1000 years.
[222002450250] |But if my speed doubles each year, it will take less than 14 years.

[222002450270] |But we don't know -- or at least I don't know -- how far we have to walk.

[222002460050] |Trying to get this post written during a 5-minute Q&A prevents me from proving that "some" does not simply mean "some but not all," but in fact it is very clear that "some" means "some and possibly all."
[222002460060] |The question, then, is why and how do people interpret such sentences as meaning something other than what they literally mean.
[222002460070] |The most interesting moment for me so far has been a question by Julie Sedivy during the first Q &A.
[222002460080] |A popular theory of scalar implicature argues that the computation of "some = some-but-not-all" is a default computation.
[222002460090] |A number of experiments that have shown that such computation is slow has been taken by some as evidence against a default model.
[222002460100] |Sedivy pointed out that saying a computation is done by default doesn't require that the computation be fast, so evidence about speed of computation can't be taken as evidence for or against a default-computation theory.

[222002470050] |In practice, this tends to mean anything that isn't semantics, syntax or phonology, though in practice the division between semantics and pragmatics tends to shift as we learn more about the system.
[222002470060] |Since Pragmatics has perhaps been studied more extensively in philosophy &linguistics, the name of the conference emphasizes that it focuses on experiments rather than just theory.

[222002480030] |In his introduction, Kai von Fintel tells an anecdote that I think sums up why it is sometimes difficult to explain what it is we do.
[222002480040] |Some time ago, Emmon Bach wrote a book for Cambridge University Press on if/then conditionals.
[222002480050] |The copy-editor sent it back, replacing every use of "if and only if" with a simple "if," saying the "and only if" was redundant.
[222002480060] |As it turns out, although people often interpret "if" as meaning "if nd only if," that's simply not what the word means, despite our intuitions (most people interpret if you mow the lawn, I'll give you $5 as meaning if and only if you mow the lawn...).
[222002480070] |Part of the mystery, then, is explaining why our intuitions are off.
[222002480080] |In the meantime, though, explaining what I do sometimes comes across as trying to prove the sky is blue.

[222002490020] |Arjen Zondervan just presented a fascinating paper with the acknowledged long title "Effects of contextual manipulation on hearers' assumptions about speaker expertise, exhaustivity &real-time processing of the scalar implicature of or."
[222002490030] |He presented two thought-provoking experiments on exhaustivity &speaker expertise, but of primary interest to me was Experiment 3.
[222002490040] |An important debate in the field has centered around whether scalar implicatures depend on context.
[222002490050] |A couple years ago, Richard Breheny &colleagues published a nice reading-time experiment in which was consistent with scalar implicatures being computed in some contexts but not others.
[222002490060] |Roughly, they set up a contexts something along the following lines:
[222002490070] |(1) Some of the consultants/ met the manager./ The rest/ did not manage/ to attend.
[222002490080] |(2) The manager met/ some of the consultants./The rest/ did not manage/ to attend.
[222002490090] |Participants read the sentences one segment at a time (the '/' marks the boundaries between segments), pressing a key when they were ready for the next sentence.
[222002490100] |For reasons that may or may not be clear, it was thought that there would be an implicature in the first sentence but not in the second, making "the rest" fairly unnatural in the second sentence, and this resulted in subjects reading "the rest" more slowly in (2) than in (1).
[222002490110] |This was a nice demonstration, and was, I tink, the first study of scalar implicature to use an implicit measure rather than just asking participants what they think a sentence means, which has certain advantages, but there were a number of potential confounds in the stimuli in this and the two other experiments they used.
[222002490120] |Zondervan fixed some of these confounds, re-ran the study and got the same results.
[222002490130] |I was interested because, in collaboration with Jesse Snedeker, I have also re-run the Breheny study and also got that basic result.
[222002490140] |However, Zondervan and Breheny both also got longer reading times for the scalar term (e.g., 'some') in the condition where there is a scalar implicature.
[222002490150] |Both take this as evidence that calculating an implicature is an effortful process.
[222002490160] |In a series of similar experiments using my own stimuli, and I just don't get that part of the result.
[222002490170] |I am fairly convinced this is due to differences in our stimuli, but we're still trying to figure out why and what that might mean.
[222002490180] |That said, the effect that all three of us get is, I think, the more important part of the data, and it's nice to see another replication.

[222002510140] |For instance, he argued that academic authors should not be transferring their copyrights to publishers, but rather license the copyright to the publishers.

[222002550020] |I have been reading Heim &Kratzer's Semantics in Generative Grammar, which is an excellent introduction to formal semantics.
[222002550030] |On the whole, I've really liked the book, until I got to an example sentence in the 8th chapter:

[222002550050] |The authors claimed that this sentence was synonymous with
[222002550060] |(2) Every man placed a screen in front of himself.
[222002550070] |I though this was absurd, because to me the first sentence must mean that there is some man (let's call him 'Jim,') and all the other men put a screen in front of Jim.
[222002550080] |It just can't have the meaning of (2).
[222002550090] |I have a great deal of respect for the authors, but my immediate reaction was that this must be one of those cases in which linguists unconciously adapt their judgments to their theory (it was important for the theory Heim &Kratzer were developing that (1) mean the same as (2)).
[222002550100] |Just to be sure, I walked into the office down the hall and took a poll of the seven people in it, none of whom study pronouns or are particularly familiar with the literature.

[222002600020] |A recent Pew survey finds that more Americans think scientists contribute a lot to society (70%) than do doctors (69%), engineers (64%), the clergy (40%), journalists (38%), artists (31%), lawyers (23%) or business executives (21%).
[222002600030] |The apparent statistical tie between scientists and doctors may be explained, however, by the fact that many people seem to conflate the two.
[222002600040] |When asked for an important scientific achievement, about half referred to a biomedical advance.
[222002600050] |The survey contains a great deal of information and is worth reading in full.
[222002600060] |A few other things stand out to me: 49% of scientists, but only 17% of the public, think American science is the best in the world.

[222002620020] |In 1874, in preparing a demographic survey of English scientists, Francis Galton noticed a funny thing: nearly half of all English scientists were oldest or only sons.
[222002620030] |In the following 135 years, the notion that your birth order affects personality, intelligence, success in the world, and just about anything and everything else has become a mainstay in popular culture.
[222002620040] |A search on Amazon turned up over 10,000 books, including such titles as The Birth Order Book: Why You are the Way You Are and The Birth Order Connection: Finding and Keeping the Love of Your Life.
[222002620050] |Are Birth Order Effects Real?
[222002620060] |It may be surprising, then, that the scientific evidence for birth order effects is heavily controversial.
[222002620070] |Perhaps more studies that failed to find any effect of birth order as studies that do (see Ernst &Angst's Birth Order: Its Influence on Personality), and many studies that do show such effects are hopelessly confounded.

[222002620090] |In the 1800s, many scientists were men of independent wealth.
[222002620100] |Generally, the bulk of inherited wealth went to the oldest son.
[222002620110] |So there were just more oldest and only sons available to be scientists.
[222002620120] |There were probably also more younger sons in the military, but this shouldn't be taken as evidence that younger children are more violent.
[222002620130] |Modern day family size tends to be related to ethnicity and class.
[222002620140] |Poor families have more children than rich families, so being a middle child actually correlates with being poor.
[222002620150] |So if poor educational achievement correlates with being a middle child (which it probably does), that may just be that more middle children go to crumbling schools than do oldest or youngest children.
[222002620160] |So if there are no birth order effects, what does that mean?
[222002620170] |Researchers like Steven Pinker (The Blank Slate) and Judith Rich Harris (The Nurture Assumption: Why Children Turn out the Way They Do) point out that if birth order effects are not real then this calls into question whether your home environment has any effect on how you turned out.
[222002620180] |If the existence or non-existence of siblings doesn't effect your personality, what chance is there that whether your parents read to you had an effect either?
[222002620190] |(They both go on to marshall additional evidence that the home environment has no lasting effects.)

[222002620210] |Harris and Pinker's claims fly in the fact of much of what we hear.
[222002620220] |Everybody knows that children who are read to do better in school, right?
[222002620230] |Children who were beaten by their parents beat their own children.
[222002620240] |Unfortunately, data like these run up against a very basic problem in science: correlation does not equal cause and effect.
[222002620250] |For instance, it is almost certainly the case that the height of the youngest child in the family is correlated with the height of the oldest child of the family.
[222002620260] |I'm tall and my younger brothers are tall, too.
[222002620270] |But I can't take credit for making them tall.
[222002620280] |We happen to share the same growth-related genes.
[222002620290] |Similarly, maybe the genes that lead a particular parent to be the sort of parent who reads to her child are also genes that make children do well in school.
[222002620300] |If this sounds implausible ("genes for reading to one's child?"), consider that there is a personality difference between people who like to read and those who don't.
[222002620310] |The former might read to their children more.
[222002620320] |And those children, inheriting the same book-worm genes, do well in school.
[222002620330] |(If you don't believe behavior is partly inheritable, The Blank Slate does a good job of summarizing the mountain of research that it is.

[222002620380] |One of the difficulties with the existing literature is that it tends to test specific claims about birth order (e.g., older children are more likely to be scientists).
[222002620390] |So if the experiment fails (the hypothesis is disproven), you only know that your specific idea about birth order is wrong.
[222002620400] |It doesn't mean that birth order doesn't have some other effect.
[222002620410] |In trying to think of a very general test of birth order effects, I realized that a century of research has shown that like marries like.
[222002620420] |Spouses correlate on just about everything measurable, from physique to personality.
[222002620430] |Certainly, spouses aren't identical twins, but they tend to be more alike one another than you'd expect if people married random strangers off the street.
[222002620440] |So if birth order affects personality, and people choose spouses based on having similar personalities, spouses should (on average) have similar birth orders.
[222002620450] |In a paper to be published by the Journal of Individual Psychology, my co-authors and I found not only do spouses have similar birth orders, best friends do, too.
[222002620460] |The effect is not huge, but it probably shouldn't be.
[222002620470] |Nobody thinks birth order rigidly determines personality, and neither do people rigidly marry others with identical personalities.
[222002620480] |What we expected was a weak correlation.
[222002620490] |Unlike much previous research, this effect can't be due to socio-economic factors.
[222002620500] |Although middle children are more common in poorer families or in families of certain ethnic groups, there is no ethnic group -- can be no ethnic group -- in which older children are more common than younger children.
[222002620510] |And yet oldest-oldest and youngest-youngest pairings were more common that oldest-youngest pairings.

[222002690030] |Professors don't teach very much, which makes college expensive.
[222002690040] |He argues that by requiring faculty to work harder "approximating the work week the rest of us find normal" and holding down some administrative costs, the tuition can be cut in half!
[222002690050] |Comments on The Choice sum up the reaction -- mainly, that strong opinions are easy to have if you have no clue what you are talking about.
[222002690060] |Most have focused on the ridiculous claim that faculty don't work very hard, presumably due to Morris's odd belief that the only time professors spend working is time spent in the classroom.
[222002690070] |Morris would presumably cringe at the claim that the only time he spends working is the time he is physically typing out an article.
[222002690080] |Well, maybe not Morris.
[222002690090] |There's no evidence in this article, at least, that he spend any time doing research.
[222002690100] |But most faculty spend a lot of time doing research, preparing for class, grading, sitting on committees, meeting with students, etc.
[222002690110] |When I find one who works less than 50 hours a week, I'll ask her secret.
[222002690120] |There are also some funny numbers.
[222002690130] |Morris argues faculty typically teach 5 courses per year, spending 18-20 hours in the classroom per week.
[222002690140] |If they were to teach 8 courses, they'd spend 24 hours in class per week.
[222002690150] |Increasing the number of courses by 60% seems to only increase hours by 20%-33%.
[222002690160] |Sounds like profitability through magical thinking.
[222002690170] |There is one point that Morris could have made, though: some universities could be made cheaper by having faculty do no research and less preparation for class.
[222002690180] |This wouldn't necessarily be an ideal situation, but it would be cheaper.
[222002690190] |The question is whether it's worth the cost.
[222002700010] |Starting Assumptions
[222002700020] |The idealized scientist might start by questioning everything and assuming nothing.
[222002700030] |However, one usually has to make starting assumptions to get things going.
[222002700040] |For instance, David Hume proved that the notion that science works at all is founded on the un-provable assumption that the future will conform to the past (i.e., if e=mc2 yesterday, it will do so again tomorrow).
[222002700050] |Starting assumptions can get a bit less metaphysical though.
[222002700060] |Here is a very telling line in linguist David Pesetsky's influential Zero Syntax from 1995:
[222002700070] |It follows from the hunch just described that hypotheses about language should put as small a burden as possible on the child's linguistic experience and as great a burden as possible on the biologically given system, which we call Universal Grammar (UG).
[222002700080] |Of course, the role of experience is not zero, or else every detail of language would be fixed along genetic lines.
[222002700090] |Nonetheless, given that linguistics tries to explain, the null hypothesis should place the role of experience as close to zero as possible.
[222002700100] |In contrast, there has been a strong trend in psychology -- and folk science, for that matter -- to assume everything is learned and prove otherwise.
[222002700110] |Ultimately, if science proceeds as it should, we'll all converge on the same theory somewhere in the middle.
[222002700120] |In the meantime, wildly divergent starting assumptions often unfortunately lead to folks simply talking in different languages.
[222002700130] |A good example is a recent exchange in Trends in Cognitive Sciences.
[222002700140] |Waxman and Gelman had recently wrote an article about how children's assumptions about the world (they called these assumptions "theories") guide learning even in infancy.
[222002700150] |Sloutsky wrote a letter to complain that Waxman and Gelman had failed to explain how those assumptions were learned.
[222002700160] |Gelman and Waxman responded, in essence: "Who says they're learned?"
[222002700170] |All three are intelligent, thoughtful researchers, so at the risk of simplifying the issue, Sloutsky's problem with the "innate theories" theory is that nobody has given a good characterization of how those theories are instantiated in the brain, much less how evolution could have endowed us with those innate theories.
[222002700180] |Sloutsky assumes learning unless proven otherwise.
[222002700190] |However, Waxman and Gelman's problem with Sloutsky is that nobody has a good explanation -- even in theory -- of how you could learn anything without starting with some basic assumptions.
[222002700200] |At the very least, you need Hume's assumption (the future will conform to the past) to even get learning off the ground.
[222002700210] |Both perspectives have their strengths, but both are also fatally flawed (which is not a criticism -- there aren't any perfect theories in cognitive science yet, and likely not in any science).
[222002700220] |Which flaws bother you the most depends on your starting assumptions.
[222002710010] |Measuring the Quality of a Scientific Paper
[222002710020] |"Good" is a notoriously difficult word to define.
[222002710030] |A pretty common and reasonably uncontroversial definition of a good paper, though, is one that has significantly advanced human knowledge.
[222002710040] |The question is how do we measure that?
[222002710050] |If the paper is in your field, you probably have a sense of the impact.
[222002710060] |But if it's outside of your field, it becomes trickier.
[222002710070] |A pretty good proxy is how many times the paper has been cited.
[222002710080] |Pretty much all the work in the study of language over the last 50 years has bounced off of Chomsky's ideas, and you can see this in the fact that his 1965 book Aspects of the Theory of Syntax has been cited 11,196 times...and that's only one of several very influential books.
[222002710090] |It takes a few years for a paper or book to start getting citations, though, because it takes time for people to read it, not to mention the fact that a paper that is printed today was probably written anywhere from 1-3 years ago.
[222002710100] |So for a new paper, you can estimate how big an impact it will have by looking at the quality of the typical paper published in the journal in which the paper in question was published.
[222002710110] |This is usually measured by -- you guessed it -- how often papers in that journal are cited.
[222002710120] |As a recent article in the Times points out, this gets tricky when you want to compare across fields.
[222002710130] |In some fields, authors meticulously cite everything that could possibly be relevant (linguistics is a good example).
[222002710140] |Other fields don't have as strong a citation tradition.
[222002710150] |Conversely, researchers in some fields traditionally work for years at a time on a project and sum up all their findings every few years in a single, high-impact publication (again, linguistics comes to mind).
[222002710160] |Other fields are more concerned with quickly disseminating every incremental advance.
[222002710170] |Then there is simply the size of the field: the more people in your field, the more people can cite you (developmental psychology journals tend to have low impact factors simply because developmental psychology is a very small world).
[222002710180] |So by looking at citation rates, you might conclude that molecular biology is the most important field of modern thought, and mathematics and computer science are among the least.
[222002710190] |I'm a fan of molecular biology, but it's hard not to admit that molecular biology would be impossible without recent advances in mathematics and computer science; the reverse is not true.

[222002720030] |The site has been due for some editing for a while; the page about me still lists me as an "incoming graduate student," though I just started my third year.

[222002730020] |I am in the process of revamping the Internet laboratory, as I'm trying to increase the number of participants.

[222002730040] |I have been averaging about 30/day -- still respectable, but it limits what I can do.
[222002730050] |In this context, I read recent reports from the folks behind Phrase Detectives with interest.
[222002730060] |Phrase Detectives, it appears, gets a slightly greater amount of traffic than I do.
[222002730070] |What I focused on was their method of advertising and how well it works.
[222002730080] |They noted that their traffic comes in the following forms:direct: 46%website link: 29%search: 12%Facebook advertisement: 13%Then they looked at the bounce rate (the number of visitors who arrive at the home page then scoot away) for each of these sources:direct: 33%link: 29%search: 44%Facebook advertisement: 90%It appears that paid advertisements -- the only one of these sources that actually costs money -- isn't worth much.

[222002750010] |Vaccination and the Assault on Health
[222002750020] |I had always though that refusal to get a flu vaccination was relatively harmless masochism.
[222002750030] |Refusal to vaccinate one's own children, on the other hand, should probably be prosecuted as child abuse, but at the least the negative consequences stay close to home.
[222002750040] |Yesterday, however, I read two articles on vaccination.
[222002750050] |One in Slate looks at the risks the unvaccinated pose to people with immunity problems (she's unable to get childcare for her child, who is undergoing cancer treatment, because the risk of being around unvaccinated children is too high).
[222002750060] |If that seems like a parochial problem ("my kid doesn't have cancer; why should I worry about vaccination rates?"), the other article, appearing in Wired, is feature-length, and focuses on the anti-vaccine movement and the dangers it poses to the health of everyone.
[222002750070] |Both note the rise in non-vaccination and the concomitant rise in outbreaks of the scourges of yesteryear.
[222002750080] |And they were scourges:
[222002750090] |Just 60 years ago, polio paralyzed 16,000 Americans every year, while rubella caused birth defects and mental retardation in as many as 20,000 newborns.
[222002750100] |Measles infected 4 million children, killing 3,000 annually, and a bacterium called Haemophilus influenzae type b caused Hib meningitis in mor ehtan 15,000 children, leaving many with permanent brain damage...
[222002750110] |But refusing to vaccinate is more than just a convenient way of decreasing the probability you'll have to pay for college (and that your neighbor's kid with leukemia will survive).
[222002750120] |This is because the un-vaccinated put the vaccinated at risk.
[222002750130] |The Risk to Us All As told in the Wired article, an unvaccinated 17-year-old Indiana girl picked up measles on a 2005 trip to Bucharest.
[222002750140] |When she returned, she went to a church gathering of 500 people.
[222002750150] |Of the 50 attendees who had not been vaccinated, 32 developed measles.
[222002750160] |Any adults who got measles had at least made the choice to take on that risk, but the children had not.
[222002750170] |Even worse are the two people who had been vaccinated but nonetheless got sick.
[222002750180] |They had been responsible and protected themselves, but this reckless 17-year-old and her parents endangered their lives.
[222002750190] |First, though, three cheers for vaccines.
[222002750200] |Of the unvaccinated, 64% got sick.
[222002750210] |Of the vaccinated and those with natural immunity, only 0.8% got sick.
[222002750220] |But still, vaccines don't always work.
[222002750230] |Sometimes they don't take.
[222002750240] |Sometimes your immune response may have weakened (for instance, through aging).
[222002750250] |Or you might just have bad luck.
[222002750260] |A 2002 study in The Journal of Infectious Diseases determined that you were safer as an unvaccinated person in a well-vaccinated country than as a vaccinated person in a largely un-vaccinated country.
[222002750270] |People who refuse vaccines aren't just risking themselves, and parents who refuse vaccines for their children aren't just risking their children, they are risking you and me.
[222002750280] |Baby-Killers What makes this even worse is that every baby is initially unvaccinated.
[222002750290] |Children have to reach a certain age in order to get vaccines.
[222002750300] |What protects babies is that everyone older is healthy (i.e., vaccinated).
[222002750310] |So adult vaccine-refuseniks made it through infancy partly thanks to everyone else getting vaccinated.

[222002750330] |Do people have the right to choose for themselves whether they want vaccines?
[222002750340] |Sure -- as long as they live on top of a mountain or on a deserted island away from contact with anyone else.

[222002760020] |Parenting advice is no doubt as old as time itself.
[222002760030] |There is good advice, and then there are myths.
[222002760040] |The Walt Disney Company is, in a roundabout fashion, owning up to one myth, which is that their Baby Einstein videos make babies smarter.
[222002760050] |This has been a well-known myth in scientific circles -- the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no videos of any type for children under 2.
[222002760060] |Controlled experiments are tough, since it's hard to assign children to either watch or not watch TV (this tends to correlate with parental factors), but a quick search found a conference paper showing that toddlers have difficulty learning words presented on television, which fits with what I hear from other language development people that young children do not learn vocabulary from television (this isn't a literature I know well -- the youngest kids I study are 4 years old).

[222002760080] |Many parents believe that raising a child bilingual makes them smarter.
[222002760090] |Some do this by having their children watch Spanish-language programming like Diego.
[222002760100] |This is likely a waste of time for two reasons: first, children typically do not learn a language if it makes up less than 20% of what they hear during a day.
[222002760110] |So a television program or two isn't going to do much good (again, citing other language researchers; I didn't see an obvious paper relating to this).
[222002760120] |Second, though, the evidence that bilingualism makes a baby smarter is weak.
[222002760130] |The problem, again, is that controlled experiments are impossible.
[222002760140] |There is no way of randomly assigning toddlers to be bilingual or not.
[222002760150] |And bilingualism correlates with family (e.g., cultural and genetic) factors.
[222002760160] |As anyone who has spent time with a bilingual family knows, raising a child bilingual is a lot of work, and many parents don't bother.
[222002760170] |The parents who do are, by definition, not randomly distributed.
[222002760180] |That said, there is a good reason to raise your children bilingual, even if it doesn't make them smarter: your children will be able to speak two languages!

[222002790040] |The sixth edition was released over the summer, and it seems it had to be recalled due to "errors and inconsistencies."
[222002790050] |I haven't actually seen the 6th edition myself (I just bought the 5th edition a couple years ago and am not in a hurry to buy the new one).

[222002790070] |However, reviewers will sometimes thank you for breaking the more frustrating rules , like the rule that charts and tables should be appended to the end of the manuscript -- not included in the document itself.

[222002840020] |One thing about being a scientist interested in how people think and how different groups of people think differently is that you constantly notice differences in how scientists and non-scientists think differently.

[222002840080] |One mark of a great researcher is the ability to spot untested assumptions (one of my favorite examples being Marc Hauser's work on language evolution).
[222002840090] |Of course, some scientists are less confined by evidence than others, and my avowedly non-scientist wife is as empirical-minded as they come.
[222002840100] |But it seems to be generally true (though I admit I don't know any well-controlled studies).

[222002840130] |In the last issue of Science Magazine, Hulleman and Harackiewicz point out that
[222002840140] |Many educators and funding agencies share the belief that making education relevant to students’ lives will increase engagement and learning.
[222002840150] |However, little empirical evidence supports the specific role of relevance in promoting optimal educational outcomes, and most evidence that does exist is anecdotal or correlational.
[222002840160] |I smell an experiment.
[222002840170] |It was surprisingly simple: students in a high school system in the Midwest were randomly assigned to write essays (as many as 8 during the semester, with an average of 4.7 essays/student) that either just summarized what they were learning in science or tried to apply what they learned to their own lives.
[222002840180] |The students who wrote essays relating science to their lives got better science grades and reported more interest in science at the end.
[222002840190] |Motivation or depth of processing?
[222002840200] |The authors discuss this in terms of motivation: students who see the relevance of science are more interested in it.
[222002840210] |(They also seem to imply that it improves confidence.)
[222002840220] |I'm interested in understanding the mechanism better (a professor in my department complains that Science articles are necessarily too short to give necessary experimental detail and theoretical motivation): were these students more interested because of the personal relevance per se, or was it simply that thinking about relevance required investing in and reinterpreting the material.
[222002840230] |After all, science isn't just a list of facts (or shouldn't be, anyway).
[222002840240] |Facts are boring; interpretations are what make science science.
[222002840250] |But that is, as they say, academic.
[222002840260] |As the authors point out, this was a relatively simple method that improved grades and interest in science.
[222002840270] |Assuming, of course, that it replicates, this is a valuable contribution.

[222002850030] |The pronoun he, on the other hand, can refer to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, or anyone else who is male (not just presidents).

[222002880040] |An interesting fact tucked in at the end of the article is that in order to make it possible to zoom down to the cellular level on each electronic copy of each slide will require 1 - 10 terabytes per slide.

[222002880060] |There are 2,400 slices of the brain (I'm not clear as to whether all will become slides, but presumably a good fraction will be).

[222002920020] |New research in Animal Behavior suggests that first-borns are "less trustful and reciprocate less."

[222002920050] |Mary is told she can "invest" as much as she wants with Sally by giving that money to Sally.

[222002920150] |The results of the study were that if Mary was a first-born, she gave $3.7 less money to Sally than if she was a latter-born (actually, the game used "monetary units," not dollars, so it's not clear how this translates).

[222002920170] |Interestingly, if Sally was a first-born, she was also returned less money Mary, meaning first-borns reciprocate less as well.
[222002920180] |It's not entirely clear that these are two separate effects.
[222002920190] |If Mary was predicting Sally's behavior by thinking about what she herself would do in Sally's shoes, you would expect first-borns to give less money (since they themselves would return less of it) and for latter-borns to give more (since they themselves would return more).
[222002920200] |One nice aspect of this study is that they controlled for the fact that latter-borns tend to come from larger families (each family has only one first-born but potentially many latter-borns).
[222002920210] |This is unfortunately not something that birth-order researchers typically do, which is problematic since people from smaller and larger families differ in many ways (including parental income, education, etc.).

[222002920230] |It's interesting that people differ based on birth-order, but I think what most people really want to know is why.

[222002960110] |If you are interested in Wave, the best thing is to simply check out their website or one of the many other websites describing out to use it.
[222002960120] |The main idea behind it is to enable collaborative document editing -- that is, a document that can be edited by a group of people simultaneously.
[222002960130] |Anyone who has worked on a group project is familiar with the following problem: only one person can work on a document at a given time.
[222002960140] |For instance, if I send a paper to a co-author for editing, I can't work on the paper in the meantime or risk a real headache when trying to merge the separate edits later.
[222002960150] |Google Docs and similar services have allowed real-time collaborative editing for a while, but although these services allow real-time collaborations, they weren't really designed for real-time collaborations.
[222002960160] |For instance, it's difficult to record who made what changes.
[222002960170] |Similarly, it doesn't allow comments (for instance, sometimes you don't want to change the text, you just want to say you don't understand it).

[222002960200] |Using the Wave Currently, we're using Wave as a collective notebook, where we record everything we've learned in the course of our research.

[222002970020] |Readers of this blog will remember Dick Morris's strange claim that professors don't do anything except teach -- it's not even clear he thinks they have to prepare for class or grade papers.
[222002970030] |This raised a considerable backlash on the Web, in which many pointed out that teaching is, for many professors, only one pursuit (and often not the main one).
[222002970040] |Around the same time, but apparently independently, a professor of psycholinguistics, Gerry Altmann, listed how he had been spending his time.
[222002970050] |In the space of 2.5 weeks, sent out 18 manuscripts for review (he's a journal editor), wrote 51 action letters (telling authors what decisions had been made), reviewed 7 NIH grants (interesting, since he works in the UK), and visited collaborators in Philly to discuss a new project (presumably part -- but not all -- of the 3677 miles he reports having flown).

[222003050030] |The comments have been overwhelmingly in favor of making research papers available for free electronically, which many suggesting they be available immediately on publication (or even upon acceptance, which is as much as a year or two before publication).
[222003050040] |The comment that was most on-point, from my perspective, was one person who wondered what purpose publishers even serve beyond copy-editing, given that all the work is done volunteers (and, come to think of it, I helped with the copy-editing of my last paper myself).
[222003050050] |Some comments go even farther, suggesting that all data should be made public immediately.
[222003050060] |I'm not sure about that idea.
[222003050070] |Preparing data so that it is easy for others to understand is by no means easy.

[222003070020] |It's well-known that both long-term and short-term memory decline with age.
[222003070030] |However, most of these data come from verbal memory tests.
[222003070040] |The evidence for visual short-term memory is less clear.
[222003070050] |A few studies (Adamowicz, 1976; 1978; Fahle &Daum, 1997) show age-related declines, but more recent studies do not (Faubert &Bellefeuille, 2002; McIntosh et al., 1999; Sara &Faubert, 2000; Thompson, Cengelci &Ozekes, 1999).
[222003070060] |In one of our longest-running experiments -- now archived -- we looked at visual short-term memory across a wide age range: from 14 years old to 90 years old.
[222003070070] |This has some advantages over the typical method, which is to test one group of young people (usually college students) and a group of older people (often recruited at a club or function frequented by folk of a certain age).
[222003070080] |With our data, we can find out not only whether visual working memory declines with age, but when it begins to decline and how rapidly.

[222003070190] |Our statistical analyses suggest that the decline begins in the 30s (the best estimate was 36.6 years of age, with a 95% confidence interval from 32.2 to 41.1 years).

[222003080030] |The first week, called "Shopping Period," in theory gives students a chance to try out different classes.

[222003080060] |One is that no schedules can be set in stone until the second -- or often third -- week of the semester.
[222003080070] |Since nobody knows how many students are going to take a class, much less which students, graduate student-led course sections can't be scheduled until the second week.
[222003080080] |This makes it difficult for undergraduate research assistants to set their lab schedules until the second or third week of the semester.
[222003080090] |The same goes for any regular meetings that graduate students and/or undergraduate students attend.
[222003080100] |Also, one can't reserve rooms for those meetings until after all the courses have rooms assigned and all the sections have rooms assigned.

[222003100020] |When I took intro to psychology (way too long ago), the graduate instructor posed the following question to the class: Does your brain control your mind, or does your mind control your brain?
[222003100030] |At first I thought this was a trick question -- coming from most neuroscientists or cognitive scientists it would be -- but she meant it seriously.
[222003100040] |On Tuesday, William Saletan at Slate posed the same question.
[222003100050] |Bouncing off recent evidence that some supposedly vegetative patients are in fact still able to think, Saletan writes, "Human minds stripped of every other power can still control one last organ--the brain."

[222003100070] |Every neuroscientist I've talked to would read this as a tautology: "the brain controls the brain."
[222003100080] |Given the gazillions of feedback circuits in the brain, that's a given.
[222003100090] |Reading further, though, Saletan clearly has something else in mind:
[222003100100] |We think of the brain as its own master, controlling or fabricating the mind ...
[222003100110] |If the brain controls the mind this way, then brain scanning seems like mind reading ...
[222003100120] |It's fun to spin out these neuro-determinist theories and mind-reading fantasties.

[222003100160] |Evidence Mind is Master
[222003100170] |As I've already mentioned above, the paragraph quoted above is nonsensical in modern scientific theory, and I'll get back to why.
[222003100180] |But before that, what evidence is Saletan looking at?
[222003100190] |In the study he's talking about, neuroscientists examined 54 patients who show limited or no awareness and no ability to communicate.
[222003100200] |Patients brains were scanned while they were asked to think of motor activities (swinging a tennis racket) or navigation activities (moving around one's home town).
[222003100210] |5 of the 54 were able to do this.
[222003100220] |They also tried to ask the patients yes-no questions.
[222003100230] |If the answer was 'yes', the patient was to think about swinging a tennis racket; if 'no', moving around one's home town.
[222003100240] |One patient was able to do this successfully.
[222003100250] |Note that the brain scans couldn't see the patient deciding 'yes' or 'no' -- actually, they couldn't see the patient deciding at all.
[222003100260] |This seems to be why Saletan thinks this is evidence of an invisible will controlling the physical brain: "On the tablet of your brain, you can write whatever answer you want."
[222003100270] |The Mistake
[222003100280] |The biggest problem with this reasoning is a misunderstanding of the method the scientists used.
[222003100290] |FMRI detects very, very small signals in the brain.
[222003100300] |The technology tracks changes in blood oxygenation levels, which correlates with local brain activity (though not perfectly).
[222003100310] |A very large change is on the order of 1%.
[222003100320] |For more complicated thoughts, effect sizes of 0.5% or even 0.1% are typical.
[222003100330] |Meanwhile, blood oxygen levels fluctuate a good deal for reasons of their own.
[222003100340] |This low signal-to-noise ratio means that you usually need dozens of trials: have the person think the same thoughts over and over again and average across all the trials.
[222003100350] |In the fMRI lab I worked in previously, the typical experiment took 2 hours.
[222003100360] |Some labs take even longer.
[222003100370] |To use fMRI for meaningful communication between a paralyzed person and their doctors, you need to be able to detect the response to an individual question.
[222003100380] |Even if we knew were to look in the brain for 'yes' or 'no' answers -- and last I heard we didn't, but things change quickly -- its unlikely we could hear this whispering over the general tumult in the brain.
[222003100390] |The patients needed to shout at the top of their lungs.
[222003100400] |It happens that physical imagery produces very nice signals (I know less about navigation, but presumably it does, too, or the researchers wouldn't have used it).
[222003100410] |Thus, the focus on visual imagery rather than more direct "mind-reading" was simply an issue of technology.

[222003100430] |The more subtle issue is that Saletan takes dualism as a starting point: the mind and brain are separate entities.
[222003100440] |Thus, it makes sense to ask which controls the other.
[222003100450] |He seems to understand modern science as saying the brain controls the mind.
[222003100460] |This is not the way scientists currently approach the problem -- or, at least, not any I know.
[222003100470] |The starting assumption is that the mind and brain are two ways of describing the same thing.
[222003100480] |Asking whether the mind can control the brain makes as much sense as asking whether the Senate controls the senators or senators control the Senate.
[222003100490] |Talking about the Senate doing something is just another way of talking about some set of senators doing something.
[222003100500] |Of course, modern science could be wrong about the mind.
[222003100510] |Maybe there is a non-material mind separate from the brain.
[222003100520] |However, the theory that the mind is the brain has been enormously productive.
[222003100530] |Without it, it is extremely difficult to explain just about anything in neuroscience.

[222003100570] |A major problem with talking about the mind and brain is that we clearly conceptualize of them differently.
[222003100580] |One of the most exciting areas of cognitive science in the last couple decades has looked at mind perception.
[222003100590] |It appears humans are so constructed that we are good at detecting minds.
[222003100600] |We actually over-detect minds, otherwise puppet shows wouldn't work (we at least half believe the puppets are actually thinking and acting).
[222003100610] |Part of our concept of mind is that it is non-physical but controls physical bodies.
[222003100620] |While our concept of mind appears to develop during early childhood, the fact that almost all humans end up with a similar concept suggests that either the concept or the propensity to develop it is innate.
[222003100630] |Descartes, who produced probably the most famous defense of dualism, thought the fact that he had the concept of God proved that God exists (his reasoning: how can an imperfect being have the thought of a perfect being, unless the perfect being put that thought there?).
[222003100640] |Most people would agree, however, that just because you have a concept doesn't mean the thing the concept refers to exists.
[222003100650] |I, for instance, have the concept of cylons, but I don't expect to run into any.
[222003100660] |Thus, even as science becomes better and better at explaining how a physical entity like the brain gives rise to our perceptions, our experience of existing and thinking, the unity of mind and brain won't necessarily make any more intuitive sense.
[222003100670] |This is similar to the problem with quantum physics: we have plenty of scientific evidence that something can be both a wave and a particle simultaneously, and many scientists work these theories with great dexterity.
[222003100680] |But I doubt anyone really has a clear conception of a wave/particle.
[222003100690] |I certainly don't, despite a semester of quantum mechanics in college.
[222003100700] |We just weren't set up to think that way.
[222003100710] |For this reason, I expect we'll continue to read articles like Saletan's long in the future.
[222003100720] |This is unfortunate, as neuroscience is becoming an increasingly important part of our lives and society, in a way quantum physics has yet to do.

[222003110010] |Lab Notebook: Building a Better Eyetracker
[222003110020] |Many of my experiments in the lab use eye-tracking.
[222003110030] |Eye-tracking is a fantastic method for studying language comprehension, developed mainly by Michael Tanenhaus and his colleagues.
[222003110040] |People tend to look at whatever is being talked about, and we can use that fact to measure what people think is being talked about.
[222003110050] |For instance, in the eyetracking experiments related to the Pronoun Sleuth experiment have online, I have people look at a picture with a couple characters on it while they listen to a story about the characters.
[222003110060] |My interest is in what happens when they hear a pronoun: who do they look at?
[222003110070] |This has two advantages over just asking (which is what I do in Pronoun Sleuth): first, it's an implicit measure, so I don't have to worry about people just telling me what they think I want to hear.
[222003110080] |More importantly, the measure is sensitive to time: people only look at who they think is being talked about when they decide who's being talked about.
[222003110090] |So I can get a measure of how long it takes to understand a pronoun in different conditions.
[222003110100] |A Better Eyetracker
[222003110110] |In the lab, we use an automated eyetracker (the Tobii T60), which can record in real time what people are looking at.
[222003110120] |This is a fantastic time-saver.
[222003110130] |Unfortunately, it's also really expensive and really heavy, so it's mostly good for use in the lab.
[222003110140] |I'll be going to Taiwan to run some experiments in March, and I won't be taking the Tobii with me.
[222003110150] |A cheap eyetracker can be built by other means, though.
[222003110160] |Our lab traditionally used what we affectionately call the "poor man's eyetracker," which is just a video camera.
[222003110170] |In a typical experiment, participants see four physical objects and hear information about the objects.
[222003110180] |The four objects are arranged in a square, and right in the center of the square is the video camera, pointed back at the participant.
[222003110190] |From the recording, then, we can work out whether the participant is looking at the object in the top left, bottom left, top right or bottom right.
[222003110200] |This is a slower method than using the Tobii, because you have to code where the participant is looking frame-by-frame in each video (Tobii does all that automatically).
[222003110210] |And it has much less resolution that Tobii, which can record where a participant is looking down to an inch or so, whereas with Poor Man's we can only get quadrants of a screen.
[222003110220] |But it's a lot cheaper.
[222003110230] |Although members of the lab have traveled with such a setup before, it's less portable than it could be.
[222003110240] |These experiments involve many objects, so you end up having a huge box of supplies to cart around.
[222003110250] |Enter Laptop
[222003110260] |Many laptops -- and all Mac laptops -- come with cameras built into their screens.
[222003110270] |One of my research assistants and a grad student at MIT and I have been trying to turn our MacBooks into portable eyetrackers.
[222003110280] |My experiments usually only involve stories about two characters, one on the left-hand side of the screen and one on the right-hand side.
[222003110290] |We show the pictures on the screen, and by use the built-in camera plus iMovie to record the participant.
[222003110300] |Based on testing, the camera records a frame 20 times per second, which is slower than the Tobii T60 (60 times per second), but is enough for the relatively slow effects I study.
[222003110310] |This is incredibly portable, since all that is required is the laptop.
[222003110320] |Except
[222003110330] |There has only been one problem so far.
[222003110340] |As I said, I'm interested in where people look when they hear a pronoun.
[222003110350] |So I need to know exactly when they heard the pronoun, down to about 1/20 or at the worst 1/10 of a second.
[222003110360] |The software that I use to code eye-movements doesn't play the sound while you're coding, so there's no way of using it to determine the beginning of the pronoun.
[222003110370] |What researchers have often done is have two cameras working simultaneously: one recording the participant and one recording the screen.
[222003110380] |These video streams can be spliced together so that you can see both simultaneously when coding.
[222003110390] |If you know, for instance, that the pronoun is spoken exactly 14,345 milliseconds after the picture appears on the screen, you just measure forwards 14,345 ms after the picture appeared on the screen.
[222003110400] |This however, requires additional equipment (the camera, not to mention the apparatus that combines the video signals).
[222003110410] |Another trick people will use is to have a mirror behind the participant.
[222003110420] |You can then see what the participant is looking at in the mirror.
[222003110430] |Our current plan is to adopt this method, except since the whole thing needs to be portable, we're using a very small (compact makeup) mirror, which is mounted on a 9-inch make-shift tripod.
[222003110440] |This can be placed in front of the laptop, but slightly off to the side so it doesn't block the participant's view.
[222003110450] |With any luck, this will work.
[222003110460] |We're currently running a few pilot participants.
[222003110470] |Head-Mounted Eyetrackers
[222003110480] |I should point out that there are also head-mounted eyetrackers, which the participant actually has to wear.
[222003110490] |These will give you a video of the scene in front of the subject, with a little cross-hair over the exact spot the participant is focusing on.
[222003110500] |These are the most flexible, since participants can turn their heads and walk around (not possible in any of the set-ups above), but they still require frame-by-frame coding (the eyetracker can't recognize objects; it doesn't know if the participant was looking at a chair or a cat -- you have to code this yourself) and they aren't great for working with kids, since they are usually too heavy for young kids to wear.

[222003130020] |I recently received an email from the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation, which is trying to provide information to people who might need it.
[222003130030] |Based on demographics, there should be a least a few readers of this blog who know somebody with CHARGE syndrome, so as a public service, I'm linking to the website and including some additional information below.
[222003130040] |CHARGE syndrome is a relatively rare (1 per 9-10,000 births, according to the Foundation website) pattern of congenital birth defects.
[222003130050] |It usually appears in families without any history of the syndrome or similar syndromes.
[222003130060] |There are a number of physical problems (often heart defects, breathing problems, and swallowing problems) as well as nervous system problems such as malfunction of cranial nerves, blindness and deafness (the exact constellation of impairments differs from person to person).
[222003130070] |Given the blindness and deafness, along with Autistic-like behaviors, it should not be surprising that there are consequences for language and communication.
[222003130080] |The forthcoming CHARGE Syndrome book (full disclosure: I am a co-author on one of the chapters in said book, and my father is the lead editor of the book) has a chapter (not by me) reviewing some recent work on communicative abilities in people with CHARGE.
[222003130090] |For very good reason, that work is focused on communication, rather than structural properties of language.
[222003130100] |Of course, I am interested in how or whether particular components of language are impacted by the syndrome (similar to how the linguistic consequences of Autism have been studied in some depth, telling us both more about Autism and about language), but I don't know of any relevant work having been done.
