Announcements sapir award in linguistics
The New York Academy of Sciences announces its annual competition for the Edward Sapir Award for a dissertation or similar work completed in the years 1983-84 or 1984-85. Submissions may be on any topic related to linguistics, such as psycholinguistics; sociolinguistics; theorical, computational, descriptive, historical, and applied linguistics; phonetics; semantics; pragmatics; text analysis; or language acquisition. The winner will receive a certificate, a collection of Academy linguistics annals, and a complimentary year's membership. The Academy also pays travel and a night's hotel expenses for a trip to New York City in April 1986, when the winner will give a talk to the Linguistics Section of the Academy on the topic of the submission. Send one copy of an abstract no longer than 20 pages and one copy of the complete document to

clearinghouse on natural language processing systems and intelligent user intefaces
Batelle is currently conducting an industry-sponsored analysis of intelligent user interfaces, in particular natural language systems. The sponsors of this project are interested in assessing the state of the art of IUI/NLP and in identifying ongoing research for possible funding.
An important part of this survey is the establishment of a Clearinghouse hosted on a PC in dBase II format. The Clearinghouse will allow researchers and companies alike to access information about ongoing projects.
If you are currently working on a NLP or IUI project, please let us know and we will send you our questionnaire. In return, we will make the result of the survey available to you. As a further benefit, your project will be included in upcoming publications (ACL, ACM, etc.) related to the Clearinghouse.
We hope you will be able to cooperate and help us to establish this needed network of people/projects in the area of IUI/NLP.
