        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">is an update on ITS with suggestions for future</line>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">lation system. Processing is divided into</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">three major steps: analysis, transfer, and</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">synthesis. Analysis is generally independent</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">of the target language, and synthesis is</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">nearly independent of the source language.</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">The transfer step is dependent on both source</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">and target languages. The intermediate</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">representation produced by analysis, adjusted</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">by transfer, and processed by synthesis is</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">defined by Junction Grammar I and consists of</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">objects called J-trees.</line>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">are not at all restricted to theological</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">dissertations. They include articles from</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">many authors in many styles on subjects ranging</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">from gardening to short stories to descriptions</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">of foreign cultures to parent-child relations.</line>
    </paragraph>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">on the other hand, consist of documents from</line>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">commercial system, the TAUM-METEO system,</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">translates weather forecasts. Their current</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">project, TAUM-AVIATION, is much more ambitious</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">but is nevertheless restricted to manuals con-</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">cerning the hydraulic systems of jet aircraft.</line>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">actual process of translation in ITS. This</line>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">using the result of analysis as the input to</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">several transfer-synthesis pairs. This means</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">that ITS is a one-to-many system. Being</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">one-to-many not only allows the overhead of</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">analysis to be shared but also provides an</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">element of consistency in the output across</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">languages. This is because all the target</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">language texts are derived from the same</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">intermediate representation produced by</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">analysis.</line>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">developed to the point where it has been</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">tested for the possibility of commercial use.</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">The dictionaries contain nearly thirty thousand</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">words, not counting idioms and other multi-word</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">units. The system has recently translated a</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">series of test passages totaling over ten</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">thousand words.</line>
    </paragraph>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">The results of the tests were encouraging.</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">The system was shown to be capable of trans-</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">lating rather general text. Thanks to human</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">interaction and an extensive English grammar,</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">nearly all the sentences of the source text</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">receive a full Junction Grammar analysis</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">which contains some semantic information beyond</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">phrase structure; and the output, though far</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">from perfect, is worth post-editing, and could</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">be considerably improved with more dictionary</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">work.</line>
    </paragraph>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">A major disappointment was the amount of</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">time spent on human interaction. It was</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">originally hoped that interaction could be</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">restricted to analysis, since the overhead of</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">analysis is shared by several target languages.</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">However, it was found that some interaction was</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">also required in transfer. The problem is that</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">interaction in transfer is specific to one</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">target language and is not shared. The result</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">is that the average amount of interaction per</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">page (~50 words) of text is currently about</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">seven minutes for analysis (i.e. about thirty-</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">five minutes shared by five languages), ten</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">minutes for transfer interaction and fifteen</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">minutes for post-editing. That makes a total</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">of about thirty minutes per page per language.</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">These thirty minutes per page include a post-</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">edit step by a human translator and so the</line>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">several translators. However, an examination</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">of the total process of translation by manual</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">methods and by the current version of ITS</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">resulted in a recent decision not to attempt a</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">commercialization of ITS at this time. Some</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">points to consider are the following:</line>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">sub-language. The limits of fully-automatic</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">translation are well-known. To date, fully</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">automatic translation has been shown to be</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">commercially useful only when it is intended</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">to be merely indicative (e.g. Russian-English</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">MT at Rome Air Force Base) or when the system</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">is tailored to a sub-language (e.g. TAUM-</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">METEO). If the need is for high-quality</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">translation of general text, the only possi-</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">bilities seem to be (i) a highly successful</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">large-scale AI approach, probably with a</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">self-learning capability or (2) an interactive</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">approach, with limited self-learning capability</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">if possible.</line>
    </paragraph>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">multiple character sets would be available on</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">the video display and the typewriter quality</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">hardcopy device. The station would also con-</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">tain a glossary which could be updated by the</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">translator. The translator could even link up</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">to a major terminology bank over the phone.</line>
    </paragraph>

        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">tion in the source language. Eventually, OCR</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">may be a practical input process for such a</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">station. At any rate, after the source text</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">is entered, the station would interactively</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">resolve ambiguities and other problems in the</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">translation. The interaction, to be attrac-</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">tive, would have to average under ten minutes</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">per page for a one-to-one translation and the</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">output would have to be of such high quality</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">that it could pass as a human translation with</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">only a few minor post-edit changes per page.</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">The work station would also have to be</line>
        <line styleRef="BitstreamVeraSans-Roman-7">reasonably priced (less than a compact auto-</line>
